Remembering the Blizzard of '77

By: Jennifer Bernstein

If you lived in Buffalo in 1977, you'll probably never forget where you were 33 years ago today. Hurricane-like winds and white-out snow left Buffalonians stranded in the Blizzard of 77'. YNN's Jennifer Bernstein visited one of the city's oldest taverns that became a haven for residents stuck in the winter white out.

BUFFALO, NY-- Jim Daley was just 18 years old working at Ulrich's Tavern, on what he thought was a regular afternoon in late January.

"I remember it being a day kind of like today. It was sunny, then it started to get really, really windy. You could feel the air change," said the Ulrich’s owner.

It was during the busiest part of the lunch hour when the weather took a turn for the worst. The tavern was a prime spot for employees of the Courier News and Trico, both down the street.

"It started to sprinkle snow, it was kind of a pretty snow day. And then it just kept coming and coming and coming," said Daley.

Little did they know a paralyzing storm, which would become known as the Blizzard of '77, was descending on Buffalo.

A massive amount of snow had been building over frozen Lake Erie for weeks.

Storm force winds off of Lake Erie blew through Buffalo. It dumped a continuous amount of snow onto the streets, making Ulrich's a safe haven in the middle of a blizzard.

"You couldn't see out the windows. They were actually frozen on the inside. We were praying that they were not going to pop because the wind was howling outside," said Daley.

By 9 o'clock the tavern had run out of food. But the beer was flowing and spirits ran high in this tavern. Some sixty people waited out the storm, sleeping on tables and chairs.

"It was kind of fun I think they just kind of settled in and it was kind of a camping out thing," said Daley.

Finally the next morning, those who waited out the storm were able to leave.

When all was said and done the city took over a week to get back to normal.

For those who lived through it, the blizzard of 77' was a storm, unlike any they've experienced since.
