When the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show came to Buffalo last year, it didn't just improve one home, it started a transformation that continues throughout the neighborhood. Our Kaitlyn Lionti was there as Buffalo Tours showed people the revitalization efforts that are changing the community for the better.
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Aida Montalvo is doing her part to improve her neighborhood.
Like many others in the area, she was inspired by the Extreme Home Makeover that took place just around the corner from her home last fall.
"All the people got motivated and decided to start changing the neighborhood so I decided my favorite color's turquoise and I would paint my house turquoise and brighten up my neighborhood," said Montalvo, a Buffalo Resident.
In addition to painting their houses, people have started working on landscaping, putting in new porches and replacing roofs.
These changes were the focus of the "Massachusetts Makeover" tour Saturday where people got to see the show's lasting impact firsthand.
"I love the work that's been done. It just, makes you want to do something. Makes you want to get involved," said Danny Castro, a Buffalo resident on the tour.
There are more changes going on in the area than just physical appearance. There is a sense of community pride that is really at the heart of the transformation.
"I'm starting to see changes because the neighbors are deciding to be more friendly to eachother and talk to eachother and motivate themselves and fixing their homes and we talk to the kids to stay out of drugs and be drug free and get along with one another," said Montalvo.
And people outside the area have already started to notice.
"I see the neighborhood really growing, I see more people moving into the neighborhood now. Vacant houses that people weren't interested in are now becoming interesting to people. There's more people from outside the area buying houses," said Harvey Garrett, Executive Director of West Side Community Collaborative, and the guide for the tour.
Montalvo is optimistic the changes will continue to inspire her neighbors. "Once we get one started the whole block will change. I believe in that," said Montalvo.
There are two more chances to take the "Massachusetts Makeover" Tour. It will be offered again on August 28th and October 23rd at 2:00 pm.
