TONAWANDA, N.Y. --- It’s been a busy week for Christine Montag.
"It's a time to test the system," Montag said.
And a time to make an informed decision on drinking and driving--- at least at Caputi's Sheridan Pub.
Montag's Ladybug Teknologies unveiled their SipSmart kiosk at the bar over the weekend, giving bar goers the chance to test their blood alcohol content.
"We live in a society where people drink all the time, it's very normal and very social but we've never had a tool to measure ourselves before,” Montag explained.
Seven years in the making, the Canadian-based company started out selling handheld breathalyzers to businessmen but decided to market to the younger crowd within the last three years.
"We've got one of the local cab companies, Liberty, advertising on the system and coupons for a local cab company as well."
Users can test their BAC by plugging a mouthpiece into the kiosk, creating a username and blowing into the machine for ten seconds.
SipSmart then measures your BAC and gives you an approximate time to zero.
The test costs $5 which is paid through a credit card; one swipe will give you three tests throughout the night.
Montag said SipSmart does most of the work for you, except for one final and important step.
"It's up to you to make that decision to take that cab home."
You can find SipSmart at Caputi's through January.
Montag said she plans to expand with more kiosks in the coming weeks.
