BUFFALO, N.Y. — Nearly 800 people lined the streets Wednesday around the Belle Center on Maryland Street waiting to receive a gift to help fill their kitchen cabinets.
Feed the Children's Americans Feeding Americans campaign came to Buffalo, teaming up with the Belle Center, the Buffalo Dream Center, PepsiCo, Tops Markets, and Ameri-corp to help feed one of Buffalo's poorest neighborhoods.
According to the Western New York Food Bank, nearly 14 percent of all individuals in Erie County are food insecure.
The Buffalo Dream Center and Belle Center pre-identified families in need, and then Wednesday, those families received 50 to 60 pounds of food and personal care products. Those essentials will help a family of four sustain for one week.
“I think it's beautiful. I think it is a blessing from God,” said Anna Maria Madenia.
“There's families that I know personally here that don't have food all the time to even make dinner, to to prepare lunch for their families. There's refugees from all over the world. As a matter of fact, over 70 langauges are spoken in this neighborhood,” said Pastor Eric Johns.
“Nice people, thank you very much,” said Faduno Barke, a refugee from Somalia.
More than 100 volunteers were on-hand to help distribute the products and when needed, help carry home the groceries to people living in the neighborhood.
