BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Salvation Army was handing out more then a hot meal Monday night at Lafayette Square.

Thanks to a record amount of donated winter gear, everyone was able to pick out gloves, hats and scarves to keep them warm this winter season.

Residents of Western New York donated more than 3,000 winter items along with more than $2,000 to support the Salvation Army's "Gift of Warmth" program.

The program is a collaboration between M&T Bank and the Salvation Army.

Officials say they reached 150 percent of their goal because of the kind hearts of Western New Yorkers.

"Western New Yorkers are always so generous, it always amazes us. They turned out in pretty good numbers this year at our branches to donate for the salvation army," said Chet Bridger, VP of corporate communications for M&T Bank.
