CORNING, N.Y. -- Eric Massa is now former congressman of New York's 29th District. His resignation became effective at 5 p.m.

Massa announced his resignation last week and maintains the claim that the decision came from his recurring health problems.

Massa has also been accused of inappropriately touching a male staff member at another staff member's New Year's Eve wedding.

Massa admitted his actions were inappropriate, but also suggested the House Ethics Committee investigation may be politically motivated because he said he is the deciding vote on the health care bill.

Some of the people once mentioned to possibly replace Massa are now coming forward saying they are not interested in running for the seat, including Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green.

Green said in a statement that while he was honored and flattered by the request to run, he is not seeking the office.

He said, "I am currently committed to serving the community as Monroe County district attorney. For professional and family reasons it does not make sense for me to seek a congressional seat at this time."

City of Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan also said in a statement he will not run. He said he is not afraid of the challenge, but said politics today are toxic.

Hogan said, "I have a profound love of my community and its citizens and I have an obligation to continue to move this community forward. We are currently faced with many challenges and I plan on honoring my commitment to the city of Hornell."

Massa supporters in the 29th Congressional District are banding together to show their support for Massa.

In response to Massa's resignation, some supporters are displaying campaign lawn signs as an expression of gratitude for Massa's service. The group sent out hundreds of e-mails to members of the 29th Congressional District to participate in the movement.

Supporter Carol Mulligan said this is a big loss for Monroe County and that Massa was a progressive voice in Congress who will be hard to replace.

Mulligan said the display shows supporters' appreciation for Massa's dedication to the middle class hard working families of Monroe County.

The lawn signs will be displayed throughout the day in honor of Massa's services.
