ALBANY, N.Y. -- The acting superintendent of the New York State Police is retiring.

Pedro Perez made the announcement Tuesday.

He assumed the role last week after Superintendent Harry Corbitt announced his retirement in an exclusive interview on Capital Tonight.

However, Perez's ability to lead the state police was immediately questioned because it was reported he authorized state police working as part of Governor David Paterson’s security detail to reach out to the woman filing domestic violence charges against Paterson’s top aide.

Perez is a 28 year veteran of the force. He will be replaced by Deputy Superintendent John Melville.
