March for peace stops in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A Western New York Buddhist order of monks is taking steps against nuclear warfare, as part of a march for peace across the state to the United Nations in New York City.

The drum circle group gathered in front of Buffalo’s City Hall to pray for peace.

The group started near Salamanca, and then headed north to Irving before stopping by Buffalo.

Some walkers aren't doing the entire 700-mile trek and instead are just doing small parts.

Pembroke’s William Privett plans to walk 90-miles from Buffalo to Lewiston to Rochester.

“It’s immoral to own nuclear weapons and threaten to kill millions of people across the world with those weapons,” said William Privett, of Pax Christi USA.

“We picked Buffalo and this area for a reason. Because of the waste sites here. Because of the west valley nuclear waste site and the NYSEDA project,” said Jules Orkin, Nuclear Nonproliferation Walker.

The group plans to arrive at the U.N. Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Conference by May 2.
