Device will lock out drunk drivers

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- The already tough Leandra's Law for drunk drivers who have kids in the car is going to get even tougher.

As of August 15, people convicted under the law will be required to install a blood alcohol content monitoring device in their cars.

The new device will check a driver’s blood alcohol content when they enter the car.

If they register as drunk, the car will not start.

The law has been tirelessly pushed by Lenny Rosado, the father of the girl for whom the law is named.

He said the new mandate is a step in the right direction even if it doesn't bring back his daughter, "I miss my daughter like crazy. It's an emotional rollercoaster every day. There's a lot of anger boiling in me. It's hard because like I said I was a single parent raising my daughter for seven years. She was my world."

Drivers convicted under the law will be required to pick up the tab for the device.
