ANGELICA, N.Y. -- "It's a great day at the fair and the rest of the week will be great too," Martha Roberts of the Allegany County Agricultural Society said Tuesday.

It's something people look forward to all year. The 166th Allegany County fair has arrived with plenty of events and activities to enjoy.

"The food. Junk food and just the relaxation," are some of what Sylvia Pettit, a Little Genessee resident, enjoys at the fair.

Centerville resident Marv Covert added, "It's good for kids, animals they can see, and the exhibits."

Organizers said one of the things that makes this fair special is through the years, it's stayed true to its roots.

"We have remained agriculturally sustainable through everything with the animals and that. We haven't grown into be a commercial place," Roberts said.

Proof of that can be found in the fair's various animal barns, where those like Justine Smith get to show their animals and what they've learned in 4H.

"This is its comb, and how I know that is because I use it and it's another word for a hair brush. And this is its beak and its eyes," Smith said.

"I love coming here," 4H member Marrissa Thurst added. "People come up and they ask you questions and just seeing the little kid’s faces who don't see animals that often, they come and they get to pet like the little animals. They just love it and it’s definitely something special to get to see that."

And even if you pig out on traditional fair food, Dairy Princess Tara Cline is on hand to make sure you have something healthy to wash it down, "My responsibilities at the fair is to make sure that people get their three a day, and that's what the free milk is for, to help people get their there a day."

The fair continues through Saturday.
