MAYVILLE, NY - Authorities continue to investigate a tornado that struck Chautauqua County Saturday and reports of a second funnel cloud that witnesses say touched down in Cattaraugus County.
The National Weather Service confirmed a EF2 tornado hit Mayville, north of Jamestown at 4:48 p.m. Saturday.
Chautauqua County authorities say residents lost power and gas service to the area. Serious damage was reported to buildings in the area of Mayville reached by the funnel cloud. Authorities reported one minor injury. They also looked into a report that a tree swept up by the storm had fallen onto an Amish buggy. The funnel cloud was also seen in Sherman.
Utility crews worked to restore service to customers in the Mayville area. Tree damage was reported in the path of the tornadoes. The American Red Cross provided relief services to those affected by the storms.
Authorities also fielded reports of a second funnel cloud in the Cattaraugus County town of Randolph. Authorities responded to reports of gas pumps blown over, large trees downed and a tractor-trailer rig flipped onto its side. No injuries were reported in the Randolph storm.
The tornado hit nearly a year to the day after another damaging windstorm struck Western New York. High winds that swept across Genesee County last summer damaged property in Corfu.
