"Hope Blooms" garden holds special meaning

Thousands made their way to Buffalo this weekend for Garden Walk Buffalo. As YNN's Kaitlyn Lionti tells us, one garden is growing more than just flowers.

"Hope Blooms" garden holds special meaning

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- It's more than just another stop on the Garden Walk Buffalo tour.

The "Hope Blooms" garden was made by and for those living with HIV/AIDs.

"We have always, always believed that we want our people to feel they're treated with respect. So having a warm, beautiful, welcoming environment for their services is very appropriate and we're very dedicated," said Christopher Voltz, from AIDs Community Services.

Voltz says there is something therapeutic about the garden that is helpful for those who come through.

"There are times our mental health counselors will have somebody who's very troubled and they'll bring them to the garden. There's something very calming about the garden; kind of cathartic," said Voltz.

Many visitors say they were impressed by the special meaning the "Hope Blooms" garden holds in addition to its beauty.

"This was the highlight for me. This was just lovely and all the love they put into it. Its just wonderful, just inspiring," said Ruthann Szychowski, a West Seneca resident.

"We didn't even know this was Aids Community Services, and we just saw such a beautiful yard and we had to stop and take the walk through. It is just absolutely incredible," said Jim Haid, a Newfane resident.

AIDs Community Services is glad to be part of what has become a major event for the city.

"It's the biggest garden walk in the nation and Buffalo's known for really beautiful architecture and then you add the gardens to it, it makes it a very special event and a very special weekend," said Voltz.

And for those who needed a break from the heat, AIDs Community Services also offered "Tea at the Victorian" inside at the garden's property.

It gave people a chance to see the 1850s building ACS saved from demolition and restored.
