BUFFALO, N.Y. -- "It was something horrible. I've never seen something like that in my life," said Timothy Mercedes, a Buffalo resident.

Mercedes watched tragedy unfold in the parking lot of the Tops on Niagara Street.
He, and several others, watched a car strike and kill an 8-year-old Buffalo boy.

"It was sad seeing him there lifeless, with you know, tons of blood," said Shawna Edwards, another witness.

"He hit the kid and then he forwarded it and then he reversed it again," said Mercedes.

Witnesses say the driver tried to leave the parking lot. Mercedes did not stand by and watch.

"I saw that and then I just started running behind him you know, and I dragged him out of the car," said Mercedes.

"It was crazy. It just seemed like he didn't have any worries, any care on this earth," said Edwards.

The driver's demeanor angered the crowd.

"There was a lot of people that surrounded the car, banging on the windows. They had to get him out of there pretty quick cause it would have been a bad situation," said Edwards.

An experience Mercedes will never be able to get out of his mind.

"I was thinking about my little sister and my little brother, you know, they come to the store all the time. I was thinking about them like what if it was them?" said Mercedes.

Police say the driver, a Buffalo man in his late 50's, has not been charged at this time.
The young boy's name has not been released.
