BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Firefighters Union and the City of Buffalo are once again at odds.
This time over time off given to firefighter escorts and an honor guard asked to honor two fallen firefighters.
Union President Daniel Cunningham said at a press conference Wednesday that he requested paid time off for eight firefighters to escort the families of Firefighter Jonathan Croom and Lieutenant Charles "Chip" McCarthy to a memorial in Colorado next weekend.
But several of the union's requests were denied, something Cunningham said is against the Union’s contract.
"Unfortunately, all of these issues are against our contract. Our contract provides for Union members to be off on Union business when they request it properly. We requested it properly," said Cunningham.
Firefighters who were denied paid leave still plan to attend the memorial, however, a fundraiser was held Wednesday night at the City Tavern in Buffalo to help offset their costs.
About 35 other members of the Buffalo Fire Department also plan to attend next weekend's memorial on their own dime.
