An independent audit of New York State health insurance coverage has resulted in $20 million in savings.

The yearlong audit surveyed state health insurance programs.

The audit uncovered misused premiums and, in some cases, benefits being paid to dead people.

"If something like this works well in the private sector, it makes sense for those of us in government to consider implementing in the public sector," said Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, (D) 144th State Assembly District.

"If you do not remove ineligible dependents from a program they will continue to cost the state tens of millions of dollars," Budco Health Services Solutions Executive VP Dave Chojnacki said.

As a result of the audit, more than 18,000 ineligible dependents were removed from state coverage.

Independent auditors processed more than 2.4 million documents and made more than 288,000 phone calls to state employees.
