AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Town of Amherst is preparing for its annual "9/11 Ceremony of Remembrance."

Local students are placing 2,793 flags outside the Amherst Town Hall, one for every person lost in the terrorist attacks.

Organizers say placing the flags helps students understand what happened on September 11, 2001.

"Well a lot of the students that are helping today were very young when the tragedy happened so it brings into focus what happened that day," Amherst Youth Board Director of Volunteers Antonella Covelli said. "So as our sign says, we remember them so we will never forget the people that died and that gave their lives and to saving others in the twin towers."

The ceremony will take place on Wednesday at the Amherst Memorial Hill Grove.
