BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A Buffalo foot race helped raise money to buy athletic shoes for area high school students. The fourth annual Fleet Feet 15K run took stride Monday through downtown Buffalo.
Proceeds from the race will benefit Shoes on Students (S.O.S). The program has purchased more than 1,000 pairs of Brooks cross country training shoes for student athletes around Western New York.
Hutch Tech, Williamsville North and Williamsville South high school students assisted with the event.
“A lot of the schools have their students volunteer for the race on the course and that way they are guaranteed to get some shoes from this race,” said Fleet Feet Race Committee Member Nick Brodnicki.
“When I turned, 70 I started running. The more I ran the better I got,” said Cheektowaga runner Henry Sipniewski. The 92 year old ran track as a high school student. His back gave out 200 feet from the finish line. Still the senior citizen got back up and completed the race in a little over two and a half hours.
The Fleet Feet 15K also hosts the USA National Masters 15K Championship which draws runners over age 40 from across the nation.
