BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Bills fans are arguably the best tailgaters in the country, but it's no secret that with tailgating comes alcohol and in some cases too much. "Obviously people like to go out and have themselves a good time and alcohol is a pretty common thing at sporting events,” Michael Mulé said.
Mulé created Designated Drivers of Buffalo two years ago. The company is for those who don’t want to leave their cars when they drink. Mulé said, “We send out a team of uniformed drivers, one will drive the car home, the other is a retriever driver."
The company has teamed up with the Buffalo Bills to try and stop fans from driving home drunk. Recently, the Bills and Designated Drivers of Buffalo received national praise for its teamwork. NFL.com called the Bills one of the most proactive teams in the country when it comes to stopping drunk driving. "We're going to make sure you can go to the games, have a good time and at the end of the day protect yourself,” Mulé said.
The dark sides of drinking while intoxicated were shown last year following a game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. 19 year old Brandon McLean drove through a crowd of fans, injuring seven people including a sheriff's deputy. McLean later admitted to be drunk and high at the time. He was sentenced to nine years in jail in February.
Designated Drivers of Buffalo wants to prevent that from happening again and the prices are pretty comparable to taking a cab. Mulé added, "It's a few dollars more than taking a taxi but at the end of the day your car is back at your home safe where you want it."
In its 2 years, Designated Drivers of Buffalo has driven home more than 3,000 people. If you’d like schedule a safe ride home you can go on www.ddobny.com or call (716) 713-7703.
