Buffalo, NY - Five teenagers were arrested and charged with beating and robbing five University at Buffalo students during a party in the University Heights neighborhood Friday night. Police say the attack took place outside the house at 211 Lisbon Avenue near UB's South Campus.

The motive for the attack is still being investigated. Eighteen year olds Brennan Bryant and DeAndre Smith, 16-year old Edmund Allen and two juveniles have been charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Abdul Yussif is a University at Buffalo senior who lives on Lisbon Avenue, not far from where the attack took place. "It's really unsafe living around here," said Yussif. "These sort of things happen very frequently."

UB Assistant Vice President for Media Relations John DellaContrada issued the following statement: "The university is in contact with the students and their families and is helping them in any way possible. The safety and well-being of our students is a priority for the university, and we are assisting Buffalo Police in its investigation of these crimes."

UB students say the threat of crime is simply a part of electing to live off campus in University Heights and all they can do is try to be aware of their surroundings. "I used to live here for two years off of Heath Street," said senior Sam Aguirre. "There's a strong police presence but obviously they can't cover everything."

The school has partnered with the city of Buffalo to improve safety and deter crime around its South Campus, including purchasing several street cameras. Residents are proactive too. The University Heights Collaborative has an Neighborhood Watch program. But the crime persists.

"When I have to walk home sometime I have that anxiety," said Yussif. "My cues are up. I'm aware. I try to see what's around me."

For UB students who choose to live in University Heights, it's become part of their college experience.
