If there is one thing the Randolph Cardinals have going for them heading into the Far West Regional, it's experience. Cardinals Head Coach Pat Slater will patrol the sidelines during the state quarterfinals for the 8th time.
Meanwhile, on the field he has a pair of seniors that were part of Randolph's state championship team in 2009. Both will advise the rest of the Cardinals on what it takes to keep their hopes of a state title alive.
"It is important for those kids that have been there before to understand and say that this is a game, guys. If you want to be successful, you have to step it up," said Slater.
The Cardinals look to shut down an Avon offense that is averaging almost 40 points per game. They will try to do so the same way they shut down previously undefeated and number one ranked Maple Grove, with a unit that is coming together allowing just six and a half points per game over their seven-game winning streak.
"We came out one and two and we knew we were better than that. That made us come out hungry and that is what we have done to execute a lot better the last seven weeks," said Cardinals senior Nate Beaver.
To turn the seven-game winning streak into eight and move on to the state semis, the Cards believe it's as simple as no mental breakdowns.
"You know we have to do pretty much the same stuff. We go out, we hit them, we do our jobs, and we stay disciplined," said Cardinals senior James Carr.
Randolph takes on Avon at 5 p.m. Friday at All-High Stadium.
