FDA addresses insulin pen misuse
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Nearly a week after a report from the Department of Veterans Affairs showed hundreds of a local veterans may have been exposed to viruses due to the misuse of insulin pens, the FDA is now reminding health care professionals about the risks of administering the shots.
The FDA says single patient insulin pens should not be used for multiple patients because of a risk of contracting HIV or hepatitis viruses.
The administration says it is aware of two incidents where the shots were misused.
The FDA is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to address infections.
