YNN highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." YNN's Adam Balkin filed the following report.

HelpBridge

Most apps are apps you want, but an app called HelpBridge falls in the category of apps you probably should get.

HelpBridge was created by Microsoft as a one-stop tool in an emergency like a hurricane, tornado or any event where you need help, or if you just need to let friends and family know you’re OK.

First, log in with either a Facebook or Microsoft account. The app then pulls in all your contacts for the initial feature.

The app has two buttons up top: "I need help" or "I’m OK". Users create an emergency contact list and then hit one of the buttons when they need to. For example, "I Need Help" sends messages to everyone on that list as an email, SMS or a post on Facebook. Users then simply type a message, hit send, and everyone who needs to know suddenly does.

On top of that, the app has loads of ways to donate to causes, either during a disaster or any time. Users can donate money to causes, donate goods or donate their time via the volunteer button.

HelpBridge is a free app for iPhones, Androids and Windows phones.

NYPD

And the NYPD has produced an app that could be a model for police department apps going forward.

The New York City Police Department includes loads of features in its app, including wanted posters, videos of potential suspects and loads of ways to contact the NYPD with tips and info on the rewards you’ll get if that info pans out.

There’s also precinct information, a button if you’re interested in joining the police department, crime statistics and a link to the NYPD Facebook page, so that if you can help in any way, you’re given all the tools to do so in the way you feel most comfortable.

NYPD is right now an iPhone only app for free. An Android version is due within the next few months
