If you're doing some spring cleaning or you're readying your house for sale, you might have a bunch of junk that you don't need anymore and want to get rid of. And if your municipality doesn't have a "curb day" coming up soon, what can you do? We checked in with a local 1-800-Got-Junk owner to get some tips.
Carl Schilling, the 1-800-Got-Junk Owner said, “They call us for a number of reasons. They don't know how to get rid of it, they don't have the vehicle to take care of it, or they're possibly physically unable to carry the items out or to go into a basement anymore where they used to be able to. That's where our people are coming to help.”
If you're not planning on selling or giving away your old furniture or electronic items, they can be hard to get rid of, especially when some items need to be discarded in a certain way.
“It all depends on what the items are as far as what happens with them. We try to recycle as much as we can. The numbers that we have looked at are up to 60% of our items are typically recycled, re-used, donated or given away. We have several vendors that we use. They dispose of them properly, our job is to get it to those facilities that best fit what it is,” said Schilling.
Another reason some people reach out is for the "hoarders." Those people you have seen on other programs who have trouble getting rid of their stuff. Schilling says they do those jobs too but it isn't usually the hoarder who reaches out.
“Typically it's the daughter or son or children of hoarders who need now to take care of the problem that they didn't necessarily cause, but that do have to take care of. They are difficult situations to handle and we've been able to overcome any the obstacles we've had so far,” said Schilling.
Schilling also said sometimes the job is done just to help take the garage back and have a place to park their car. If you do choose to use a junk removal service, you are looking at an average time of a couple of hours, depending on how much you need removed.
