A big part of being healthy has to do with what you eat, and as YNN's Kaitlyn Lionti tell us, a local hospital is working to help its patients, employees and visitors make smart choices when it comes to food.
KENMORE, N.Y. — Kenmore Mercy Hospital ditched the deep-fryers to offer more heart-healthy food choices Wednesday, as they joined the American Heart Association's National Eating Healthy Day.
"It's the perfect day to press that reset button and make those little changes to make a lasting impact in your life. With the incidents of heart disease and people developing heart disease younger and younger," said Naheed Ali-Sayeed, the hospital's clinical nutrition manager.
The hospital's food service manager, Kathy McAlpine, says they gave their menu a twist to showcase some healthier options.
"We have a meatball sub, which we generally have beef meatballs, today we turned it into ground turkey. So just trying to show our customers here that you can eat alternate foods and have them taste just as good," said McAlpine.
But this isn't just a one-day initiative. The hospital features "Meatless Mondays" and "300 Calorie Meal Tuesdays" and offers healthy options on a daily basis.
McAlpine said,"We do veg subs, veg tacos, veg wraps. It's very popular today."
Kenmore Mercy is also redesigning its patient menu to include more vegetarian options.
And they're not just serving up healthy choices.
"It's important to kind of educate our patients, our visitors on proper portion sizes, portion control, what a healthy diet should include," said Ali-Sayeed.
She recommends following the USDA's MyPlate nutrition guide, and says it's better to alter your diet before a health crisis happens and you don't have a choice.
