We're learning more about Monday’s fatal shooting in Monroe County that claimed the lives of two firefighters and injured two others. YNN’s Geoff Redick joins us now from Webster with the latest.
WEBSTER, N.Y. -- "We did locate apparent human remains in the ruins of the house at 191 Lake Road. The medical examiner has removed these remains, again 191 Lake Road is where the shooter resided with his sister. The medical examiner will be working on the identification and I’m assuming this will take quite a period of time. The assumption is that is the shooter's sister," said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering.
You just heard from Webster's Police chief with the very latest on the Christmas Eve shooting that rocked the community. The chief announced that a body was found in the home of 62-year-old William Spengler, the man police say opened fire on first responders Monday, killing two of them.
Authorities believe the remains are those of Spengler's sister, Cheryl, who is still unaccounted for.
Police say William Spengler set fire to his home in Webster in order to ambush first responders. Police say he killed two firefighters before engaging in a gun battle with officers.
They say Spengler had an arsenal of different weapons. He later killed himself, according to the medical examiner's officer.
Pickering said, "He had armed himself with three different weapons and an arsenal of ammunition. He had armed himself with a Smith and Wesson .38-caliber revolver, a Mossberg .12-gauge pump shotgun and a Bushmaster .223 caliber rifle with a flash suppressor. The investigation on the lineage of the weapons is continuing. My investigators are working with the ATF, the Sheriff's investigators and the State Police criminal investigators."
Police are still unsure if there are any other victims in the rubble.
