A Greece woman has been charged for illegally purchasing firearms for a gunman, who used them to kill two firefighters on Christmas Eve.
Firefighters Tomasz Kaczowska and Lieutenant Mike Chiapperini were both gunned down as they responded to a fire, which police say was intentionally set by the shooter, William Spengler.
Spengler's attack also injured firefighters Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino.
The woman is 24-year-old Dawn Nguyen. She's a former next-door neighbor to William Spengler, who police say injured and killed West Webster firefighters on Christmas Eve.
The U.S Attorney's Office says the charge against her involves what's called a "straw purchase" of guns. What it means is that Dawn Nguyen knowingly purchased guns for William Spengler, but told the merchant that the guns were for her.
This all happened back in the summer of 2010, when Nguyen and Spengler visited the Gander Mountain store in Henrietta, together. According to investigators, Spengler hand-picked the guns he wanted – a .223 Bushmaster high-powered rifle, and a Mossberg .12 gauge pump-action shotgun.
Dawn Nguyen then bought those guns under her name, and sometime between then, and the tragedy this Christmas Eve, Spengler took possession of the guns, and hatched his plan to kill first responders. Spengler later killed himself with one of those guns.
"While William Spengler may have escaped the criminal justice system, those who provided the firearms to Spengler that he used on Christmas Eve to murder and wound the firefighters and the police officer, will not escape the criminal justice system," said U.S. Attorney William Hochul.
According to federal court paperwork, Dawn Nguyen admits most of this information to police. She faces up to 10 years in jail and a quarter-million dollar fine if convicted. She's also facing a state felony charge for falsifying business records.
We've reached out to Gander Mountain where those guns were purchased for a comment and we have not heard back from them yet.
We're told there may be more charges and arrests. There was a third gun, a revolver, found near Spengler's body on Christmas Eve. Right now, investigators are not sure where he got that gun.
The investigation continues.
