Byron Mulkey tries out with the Bills

By: Andy Young

The Bills wrapped up their 3-day rookie mini-camp on Sunday. While the rigors of the NFL are brand new for most of the players at camp, just being on the football field was a transition for one former local high school and college standout. YNN's Andy Young explains at One Bills Drive.

The last time we saw Byron Mulkey, he was staring at point guard for the UB basketball squad. After a brief stint playing professionally in Morocco, the Wheatfield native is trying his luck in the pros again, only this time, it's football and a tryout with the Bills.

Mulkey said, "You know honestly I looked down today and it was kind of surreal. I'm like, 'Wow, I'm at a mini-camp and I'm with the Buffalo Bills.' It's a great feeling and I'm just happy to be out here to compete.

It's been more than six years since Mulkey donned the helmet and shoulder pads as a high school player at Niagara Wheatfield, where he was an All Western New York Defensive back in 2005.

"The biggest thing coming in here was really just getting the football terminology down and really just being a football player now. The footwork and things that I've worked on previously to get here, they translated pretty well. Now it's just as far as the X's and O's and being where I'm supposed to be all the time,” said Mulkey.

Even though he's been away from the game of football for quite some time, Mulkey still has the confidence and competitive edge that came with playing hoops at UB.

"The games translate all over as far as the physical and the mental. Mental is a big thing and I think I'm pretty strong in that category. So as long as I can bring that effort and intensity everyday, I think I'll be in good shape,” said Mulkey.
