Work continues at "Extreme Neighborhood"
BUFFALO - Extreme Makeover: Home Edition recipient Delores Powell says everyday she walks out her door, she sees a new world. Powell used to see a west side neighborhood that was filled with vacant lots, houses painted with graffiti, and trash filled streets. Powell says that's all changed since the national TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came to Buffalo last month, built her and her family a brand new home, and fixed up more than 50 homes in the area. Something Powell has dreamt of since moving to Buffalo 6 years ago.
"I know that there was going to be some kind of improvement, but I didn't know it would happen this fast," Powell says.
But the work hasn't stopped. Push Buffalo crews and Delores herself are still getting their hands dirty a month after the show left. Wednesday volunteers focused on five different projects. Cleaning out overgrown gardens, putting up a new fence, and painting over graffiti.
Push officials and Powell say the transformation couldn't have happened without Extreme Makeover, and they're taking it a step further.
PUSH Buffalo Chairperson Jen Mecozzi says, "We plan to start cleaning up there, behind me, the vacant lots, and start spreading this throughout the city of Buffalo."
Powell has big dreams saying, "I want the west side to be transformed to move it throughout the entire Buffalo area."
