Adoption agency seeks to help Haitian orphans

By: Jason Torreano

Adoption Star in Williamsville has worked for years at placing children from around the globe and around the neighborhood into loving homes right here in Western New York.

One of the countries the agency works with is Haiti. Since the earthquake, Adoption Star has shifted its focus slightly from adopting children from Haiti to taking care of children living at an orphanage they partner with. YNN's Jason Torreano has the story.

BUFFALO, NY -- Adoption Star's mission is simple: find loving homes for adoptable children. While that mission remains the same, the agency is also now working to do something else as well: keeping adoptable children in Haiti happy and healthy following the earthquake.

45 children call an orphanage just outside Port-Au-Prince home; and this home is in serious need of repair.

"Our main concern is the health of the children,” said Sarah Rohde, a social worker at Adoption Star. “Are they okay? Did they eat today?"

Sarah Rohde says a few families are currently going through the process to have children from this orphanage make a new home for themselves in Western New York.

She contends though that there are thousands of orphaned children who remain in Haiti and who need help.

"New cases, unfortunately are at a stand still because their main focus right now is helping children that were matched with families get out of Haiti," Rohde said.

That’s why Adoption Star is spearheading an effort to rebuild the orphanage that crumbled in the aftershocks of the earthquake.

"These children are in fact living outside," said Flory Herman, legal counsel for the adoption agency.

Money will go toward rebuilding the walls, fixing the fallen ceilings and, perhaps just as importantly, providing hope to children who've survived so much disaster.

"We know there's going to be a dramatic need in terms of providing for the care of these children,” said Michael Hill, the project lead. “These orphans that will, in all likelihood, be in orphanages."
