AMHERST, N.Y. — Thousands of riders hopped on their bicycles Saturday to help raise millions of dollars to fight cancer.

The 16th annual Ride for Roswell kicked off Saturday morning at UB's North Campus.

More than 7,000 riders participated in this year's ride, which is expected to break fundraising records. The ride benefits cancer research and patient care programs at Roswell Park Cancer institute.

Riders chose between 10 different bike routes, ranging from the three-mile family fun ride to the 100-mile century ride.

"My cousin's wife and my good friend passed away in 2008 with pancreatic cancer and this keeps her memory fresh in our minds,” said Larry Schottke.

"My dad has had cancer twice. He's a survivor. I think almost every family has had somebody who's been touched by cancer,” said Nancy Attard.

The ride is expected to raise close to $2.9 million.
