BUFFALO, N.Y. — A youth summit Thursday aimed to teach leadership skills and the important of healthy minds and bodies in today's youth.
The high school students may have looked like they were in gym class, but they were actually learning about living a healthy lifestyle.
Nearly 300 local 10th and 11th graders from dozens of schools throughout the area were at the First Niagara Center, taking part in a healthy obstacle course with former Buffalo Sabre Rob Ray and taking part in various sessions about leadership and bullying.
"We want to be a part of the solution, and one of our sessions today is giving our young leaders techniques and skills so that they can move past any bullying,” said Julie Snyder, director of corporate relations with BlueCross Blue Shield.
"I think they're sending a good message that if you eat healthy and stay active, you might have a more fulfilling life,” said Matthew Ritchie of Emerson High School.
The program opened with a remark on great leaders who have overcome obstacles, touching on the late Steve Jobs, who was bullied while he was growing up.
