BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Public Schools and Read to Succeed Buffalo have unveiled a plan to compete for the All America City Grade-Level Reading Award.

Interim Buffalo School Superintendent Amber Dixon was on hand at the public forum Thursday to set goals to increase literacy in students by third grade.

The forum was held to gain community feedback before a final application is submitted in March.

Buffalo's plan emphasizes school readiness and an increase in student attendance. Dixon says the city will work hard to address these problems.

"We're putting together a plan, we're putting together a proposal saying that Buffalo is ready to stand up as one body and support early literacy," said Dixon.

More than 160 cities across the country will try to win the award. The Buffalo community has won the competition twice.
