TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Tonawanda High School held a ceremony honoring past athletes Thursday; however, one inductee stood out from the others.

Thirty-three-year-old Christopher Slauson, a 1998 graduate of Tonawanda High School, was honored posthumously for his impact off the field.

Slauson, whose family said was autistic, passed away last October. His family accepted the award on his behalf.

Many who knew Slauson said he was a heavy supporter of the athletics, and had a strong presence at every Warriors game.

They said he went out of his way to make every student athlete feel special, and was given the nickname, "Mr. Tonawanda."

"Chris knew every student athlete,” said Sharon Stuart, Tonawanda school board president. “If their name was in the paper, he would cut it out, make photo copies of the article, and cut out each individual picture and mail them to you or bring them to you in an envelope."

Slauson’s father, Howard, said his son was someone who embodied the city and the school.

"He loved his high school and his high school was the center of his being, but he loved the whole community," said Slauson.

Slauson's plaque will remain up on the walls of the high school along with other past honorees.
