BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation broke ground on renovations to Buffalo's Canalside Saturday.
Public canals are being installed at the former site of the Memorial Auditorium.
The almost 24-million dollar project is expected to be completed in the spring of next year.
The canals are designed to mimic how the area looked at the turn of the 20th Century.
Local leaders say the project will create 200 construction jobs and stimulate economic growth.
"The whole idea in waterfront development is not only to make the waterfront more accessible and attractive, but making it attractive to private sector development, injecting new economic viability into this area that's been economically dead for the past 75 years," said Congressman Brian Higgins.
In the winter, the canals will be used as an ice skating surface, which will be three and a half times the size of the surface at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
