TOWN OF LEWISTON, N.Y. — Many across the country took a moment of silence Monday as fallen heroes were remembered on Veteran's Day.
Niagara University students and officials gathered at the college's 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden to reflect on the soldiers who gave their lives protecting our freedom.
A commemorative plaque depicting the historic site was also unveiled and dedicated to the Peace Garden.
"We're trying to say thank you to those who served, to those who died in service as well, from both the U.S. and Canada,” said Tom Chambers, a professor at NU. “We really want to use this opportunity to say our two countries have been at peace for 200 years and here's a commemoration of that peace."
The Bicentennial is the start of a three-year celebration memorializing the War of 1812.
