BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The wheels are turning as millions of people across the country hit the road for the busiest travel day of the year. For the fourth year in a row, AAA says the number of people traveling 50-miles or more has gone up, despite higher gas prices.
AAA says more than 43-million people will travel by planes, trains and automobiles this week. 90% of them will be in a car.
"This is a holiday where a majority of people are driving so be careful on the roads," said Steve Pacer of AAA Western & Central NY. "Be on the lookout and extra attentive. This is a happy time of year with your friends and family so be safe and extra attentive."
AAA says a few tips to stay safe on the road are:
Leave early and avoid peak traveling times.
Drive the speed limit and obey traffic laws.
And know where you're going and map out your drive before you leave.
AAA says Sunday will also be busy on the road as drivers make the return trip home.
