AWOL reservist accused of passing bad checks across WNY
An AWOL reservist from Sanborn is accused of passing bad checks cross Erie and Niagara counties.

Police arrested 21-year-old Steven Burns Monday after they say he cashed $300,000 in personal checks on his closed account at Evans Bank in the town of Tonawanda. They say he posed as a deploying serviceman and told tellers he needed cash fast.

Investigators also say Burns did the same thing on at least 30 separate occasions.

Police in Tonawanda also say Burns is listed as AWOL from his reserve unit.

He was arraigned on petit larceny and issuing bad check charges and is being held at the Erie County Holding Center on $5,000 bail.
