BUFFALO, N.Y. – “It's a tragedy,” said Buffalo resident Elton McDaniels. “Especially when she was just going to the store."

Family and friends remember Fillmore Avenue crash victim
Friends and family say it's a tragic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. 54-year old Ida Murphy was on her way to a store on Fillmore Avenue when the unthinkable happened.

"I heard there was a high speed chase and the guys ran into several poles," said McDaniels.

According to Buffalo police, at about seven Thursday night, 48-year-old Issac Parker of Buffalo was pulled over for a routine traffic stop. Police suspected he was intoxicated. Parker then sped off, dragging one officer, and prompting another officer to fire a shot. The car sped up North Fillmore before veering on the sidewalk, hitting three light poles. Parker was pronounced dead at the scene. Murphy was found under one of the light poles.

“She didn't deserve this,” said a friend of Murphy. “She was a very, very good person. Everybody knows Ida.”

Friday, friends and family came out to pay their respects Friday, placing stuffed animals near the spot where Murphy was killed. Friends say Murphy was known for her work in the community, including her volunteer work at her church Antioch Missionary Baptist Church right across the street from where she was killed.

“She worked in the pantry, she was here twice a week,” said Rev. William Bunton of Antioch Missionary. “She was here yesterday, she's here every Sunday and she was a good member.”

"She'll laugh, she'll help you, she's a fun type of person, and she was a sister that I never had," said Murphy’s friend.

Members of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church say they plan to reach out to Murphy’s family to help them in their time of grief, and to help them deal with a tragedy that no one saw coming.
