BUFFALO -- There was everything you would expect in a hospital. Beds, equipment, and hospital furniture. There was also kitchen equipment and old Kittinger tables and chairs.

More than 2,000 items spread throughout ten floors of the former Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital went up for bid Tuesday. It was one of the largest auctions auctioneer Cash Cunningham has ever done.

"It was a large hospital and it's absolutely loaded," Cunningham said.

The one day auction attracted hundreds of curious buyers, and there was literally something for everyone.

"There are things that would appeal to just a wide variety of people," said Cunningham. "Some things like stainless steel scrap, all the way to people who can reuse or resell things, on through people who need office furniture and so forth."

The former Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital in Buffalo served the community for 140 years. It closed down in March and moved its operations to the new Gates Vascular Institute on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Kaleida Health Spokesman Michael Hughes said, "While it's an end to an era, it's also the beginning to another one. It's part of the revitalization of Western New York."

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Kaleida Health Foundation.

Plans are in the works to turn the former hospital into a veterinary school. No timetable has been given for that project.
