NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – Nails that used to hold more than two dozen awards are all that remain on an empty wall in the Niagara Falls police superintendent's office.
Chief John Chella began packing up his belongings Thursday as he prepares to pass the torch to Det. Lt. Bryan DalPorto.
"I'm very happy because I know Bryan is a community person, and he's been an integral part of the administration now for at least five, six years," said Chella.
DalPorto was appointed to the position of Superintendent of Police by the city's mayor Wednesday night.
As a veteran of the department for 15 years, DalPorto said come Monday, he'll be ready to take on his first order of business.
"We have some crime-prevention strategies that we'll be working on in the new year,” said DalPorto. “It'll include community policing, community-orientated programs."
DalPorto started his career in the U.S. Air Force, and is still active in Air National Guard.
He later became a corrections officer with the Niagara County Sheriff's Department, where he met Chella.
The new police chief said working closely with Chella in the department's narcotics division the last four years has been an invaluable experience.
"He went from my boss to a mentor to a teacher to my friend, so I think everyone here is going to miss him," said DalPorto.
And after nine years as the superintendent and nearly 42 years in the department, Chella said his last day Friday will be bittersweet.
"The old saying is, when you walk out the door, especially a job you've done 42 years, the number one thing you'll miss are the people, and that's paramount in this case," he said.
As far as retirement plans go, he said he's looking forward to a little relaxation.
"Destroy my alarm clock," Chella joked. "I have no plans. My wife's retired. I'm retired. Take each day for what it brings."
