District considers closing Cassadaga Elementary

SINCLAIRVILLE, N.Y. — Dwindling enrollment may force the closure of one of two elementary schools in the Cassadaga Valley School District.
The district is projecting a $1.6 million budget deficit next school year.
Cassadaga Elementary will only have about 65 students next year compared to Sinclairville Elementary with 350 students.
The district estimates a savings of $500,000 if officials consolidate pre-K through 5th grades at Sinclairville.
The school board created a special committee Monday to explore the recommendation.
"Every school district, Cassadaga Valley included, is faced with many difficult decisions. None of which we really want to make, all of which we have to consider really to just provide basic programming for our students," said Scott Smith, Cassadaga Valley Central School Superintendent.
The board also approved a $15,000 retirement incentive for teachers and staff.
A special board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 4th.
