Teacher evaluation agreement reached but may not pass by deadline

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. — While the Buffalo Public Schools and the Buffalo Teachers Federation reached an agreement Tuesday on the district's Annual Professional Performance Review, it might not pass by Governor Cuomo's Thursday deadline.
According to representatives from both sides, the state had some issues with the document. The State Department of Education leaders gave the district guidance on what to fix.
According to district superintendent Ben Halsey, the agreement was approved Tuesday afternoon by the department of education.
He says the project was labor-intensive, which took the small district a longer time to get it approved.
The district and the teachers union have a team working on the corrections.
"We already submitted a document back in June, and they had certain issues with it. So all we had to do, supposedly, was to correct the deficiencies. Apparently now they've found new deficiencies with the plan," said BTF president Phil Rumore.
District Superintendent Pamela Brown is very hopeful they'll have a plan to resubmit by Thursday.
If that plan is not approved, the district could lose tens of millions of dollars.
