On New Years Day, a fire tore through the Depew Boys and Girls Club, destroying nearly everything inside. But since then, many have stepped up to help the club rebuild.

YNN's Kate McGowan caught up with local firefighters, who held a boot drive Saturday in support.

DEPEW, N.Y. -- 'Fill the boot' was the goal for a number of firefighters, Saturday. People driving along Transit Rd in the Village of Depew were encouraged to drop in a few dollars, or whatever change they could dig up.

"The guys enjoy helping people that need help," exclaimed Depew Fire Chief, Dave Adamberger. "And right now they're in the need so everybody is out in the streets."

The firefighters who worked the boot drive are the same men and women who responded to a fire at the Depew Boys and Girls Club on New Years Day. That fire left the club burned out and destroyed.

The Depew and Lancaster firefighting family wanted to do what they could to show support.

"They risked their lives in these burning buildings and we really appreciate everything they've done. It was hard to take," explained Boys and Girls Club Executive Director, Dave Hoch. "It's a big part of all our lives and a lot of the kids in the community obviously grew up here for all these years."

Hoch said the club serves as many as a hundred children a day in both the Depew and Lancaster communities.

Although the fire caused devastation, he said there are big plans for the future of this building.

"Bigger and better, and to better accomodate. This is an old building, this part of it. We want to better accomodate the kids," said Hoch.

All proceeds from the boot drive are going to the club's rebuilding fund. Fire officials said the amount of damage amounts in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Many have hope the club will make a quick comeback.

"The outpouring of support from the community has been tremendous," Hoch expressed.

Adamberger said, "It's a worthwhile thing to keep it going so we do what we can."
