BUFFALO, N.Y. — A group of high school students gave up sleeping in and instead spent the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday helping an organization that works with the disabled.

More than a dozen students from Tapestry Charter High School in Buffalo and Costa Rican exchange students volunteered at People Inc. on Monday.

People Inc. is in the process of moving several programs to its Delaware location, so the students helped unpack and set up the facility.

They say the day of service was a great way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.

"It's good to be able to help people who don't have, at least, as many means to help themselves out and kind of volunteer your time. It's not a big deal, just a few hours of your day," said Eli Jackson, a sophomore at Tapestry Charter School.

People Inc. will be ready to start its programming on Tuesday; something employees say wouldn't have happened without the help of the students.
