AMHERST, N.Y. --- Town of Amherst officials are warning that some contractors are scamming homeowners.

Police say there have been several cases recently where homeowners have been charged a substantial amount of money, with little to no work done on their homes.
In some cases, the work done wasn't even necessary.

Police say the contractors are preying on elderly residents and shut-ins.

Police say they've prevented some cases already.
