Falls shows sweeter side at inauguration

A painting at the inaugural luncheon wasn't the only piece of Niagara Falls on display during the inaugural ceremonies Monday. YNN's Meg Rossman shows us how the nation's capitol saw the sweeter side of Niagara Falls and what it means for a local business.

It turns out Niagara Falls was in the spotlight in a sweet way during President Barack Obama's inauguration Monday.

"We brought 500 individual pieces and did ten individual picture frames all pertaining to the Falls,” MaryAnn Hess said.

And they were all made of chocolate.

"People were just standing in front of our table screaming saying they couldn't believe they were chocolate.”

Hess spent weeks crafting the edible frames and medallions after receiving an invite to display her creations at the Inaugural Gala.

"It was just nice to do something for Niagara Falls, for where we live."

The barber by trade started Niagara’s Honeymoon Sweets seven years ago out of her Cleveland Avenue basement and never dreamed her creations would make it all the way to the White House.

"I started it for my grandson who was four at the time,” she explained. “And he had some medical issues with Crohn’s and we did it just to help with some extra expenses with him."

That small gesture led to Hess' trip to D.C. and some major opportunities.

"I never intended to go to Washington or meet Nik Wallenda, he's wonderful," she said.

It's likely Hess, who donates a portion of the profits from her Daredevil Chocolates line to local causes, will be rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous again soon. Following her success in Washington, Hess and her chocolate frames will be heading to the Emmy's and Grammy's this spring.

"Chocolate can bring you nice places, because everybody loves chocolate!"
