LACKAWANNA, N.Y. — Demolition is now underway on a symbol of Western New York's industrial past.

Crews began demolition work on the former Bethlehem Steel administration building in Lackawanna late Thursday morning. The State gave permission to begin tearing down the building in December.

The Lackawanna Industrial Heritage Group has been trying to save the building and says the demolition shows a failure of leadership in Lackawanna government.

"It's pretty sad that they started demolishing it in the back. It's frustrating a little bit but you have to keep hoping that they could stop before they get to the oldest section of the building," said John Nowak, a protester.

The demo should take about four to six weeks.
