Bill would inform home buyers and renters about prior meth labs

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In the next few weeks, State Senator Tim Kennedy will be proposing legislation to insure the safety of home buyers and renters.
Buffalo Police Captain Henry Baranski says that when methamphetamine is made, it can contaminate a building. Chemicals left over from the production of meth can leave residue that can have potentially serious health concerns, especially in children.
Kennedy's bill would require that before a building that housed a meth lab is sold, that the seller divulge the info to a potential buyer. Landlords would also be required to inform potential tenants about a former meth lab.
"With the proliferation of methamphetamine, our communities, across our state, and our nation, our family's dream homes are turning into nightmare scenarios," said Kennedy, (D).
Kennedy's bill also says that a seller who knowingly doesn't reveal that there was a meth lab that wasn't cleaned up will be liable for decontamination costs and any costs due to health-concerns.
