AMHERST -- Hearty runners laced up their sneakers and donned their scarves for the 19th annual Penguin 5K.

Penguin 5K benefits Cradle Beach

More than 600 runners braved temperatures in the 20s in Amherst Sunday. The run benefits Cradle Beach's summer camp for children with disabilities and disadvantages.

The organization also runs mentorship and tutoring programs in three Buffalo schools, throughout the year.

Proceeds help to bridge the gap between what kids can actually pay. It makes it possible for them to be able to participate in programs, because we're serving a population that just doesn't have the income to support that," explained Cradle Beach CEO Timothy Boling.

Eighty percent of Cradle Beach's revenue comes from fundraising. Organizers expect to raise about $50,000 from Sunday's race.
