NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — A Niagara Falls native has thrown his hat in the ring in the race for one of three open seats on Niagara Falls City Council.

Joe Swartz, a 23-year-old Democrat, announced his campaign Wednesday on the steps of City Hall.

He's among the youngest to run for the council, and he's also openly gay.

Swartz says he's ready to hit the ground running and says he has big goals for the city if elected.

"I want to streamline government. I want to make it more efficient so that we can reduce costs and actually reduce the burden on our homeowners and businesses here," Swartz said.

Primary elections for the seat will be held in September.
